DIY: Do Something

Hey guys! So today I’m sharing “Thanks” since it’s apropos for this week’s Holiday (THANKSgiving)…  I’m so thankful to be here today and to be given the opportunity to share this experience with y’all 🙂 The DIY I’m posting today is more of a commentary than a list of steps for you to “Do Yourself”… I’m more interested in promoting you to just “Do Something” in general.

Normally I would say… Do something for yourself or someone else… but today I’m thinking we should lean more towards the someone else. Projects are always nice things to share with people. I love working on projects with friends, coworkers, and family members! Working on a project alongside someone can be a great way of getting to know someone better, showing love & support to the people we already know really well, or just inserting a little fun into the “seriousness” of our daily lives.

This little DIY: Apron you’re seeing is a project I wanted to do in order to learn how to sew. I figured an apron would be simple enough to learn on and useful enough to use in my kitchen and garden. My wonderfully talented stepmom Cheryl was kind enough to lend her skills for guidance and assistance throughout this project… I would’ve been lost without her! I’m so thankful that we got to spend time together… visiting, cutting fabric, sewing, trimming, fixing mishaps, and sewing some more! It was superb quality-time that I will forever cherish 🙂

My Dad also lent a hand supervising our work 😉 He is actually a wonderfully talented seamster himself! He gave me pointers and hovered conveniently (just in case I needed him lol). I love that he knows so much about so many things… and he always knows how to go one step further to do the job that much better! I think of him and his work ethic often 🙂 He makes me strive to be a more better faster stronger harder efficiently smarter worker.

In total I probably only worked on this project for about 8 hours… but the quality of the time spent with my dear family is infinite. Thank you Lord for my wonderful family… and for them living across the street so that I have ample opportunity to make glorious memories with them!

Until Tomorrow Lovelies…

#smallbusinesssaturday

Hey guys, so the next coming weeks mark a lot of “shopping holidays” like… Cyber Monday … Black Friday (cray cray). Small Business Saturday was first observed Nov. 27, 2010 as the counterpart to the above mentioned shopping frenzy days. Small Business Saturday is quite the contrast, it’s an encouragement for Holiday Shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. And Guess What?? You’ve lucked out, because here at Myra’s we are definitely brick and mortar and small and local…

“We have been built from the ground up. We started with nothing… And we have most of it left!”

ShopThruTheYears

Myra Mayo had a small start in early 1996. Out of her love for gardening and a desire to serve her community, she started selling hanging baskets at a local market and out of her front yard. Myra opened the store front where we are now located in 1998. With the help of other garden loving employees, Myra’s Garden has grown to become a service oriented, educational facility.

To Honor Myra’s commitment to the community and our desire to serve we will be offering special discounts on select items during #smallbizsaturday …Tune in tomorrow for a sneak peek at some of the items that will be on discount and this week’s Handy Holiday Tips!

We’ve got chicken, eggs, beef, pork, veggies and herbs all represented here 🙂 We are hoping to expand into a few other streams of homesteading… what would you like to see at Myra’s? What kinda product would you be interested in purchasing during your visits with us?

Until Tomorrow… We look forward to hearing from you!

#tiptuesday Winterize Your Hands

So… my hands have been getting rather dry lately… the skin has been peeling & rolling up, cracking around my cuticles & finger tips… just getting those regular old man hands as I like to call’em. hehe. Usually when this sort of thing starts happening to my body I think, “there’s gotta be some kinda DIY or home remedy I can try to solve this!”

Guess what?? There is! Jill, from The Prairie Homestead, gives the following recipe for a DIY Gardener’s Hand Butter:

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 Cup Shea Butter
  • 1/8 Cup Sweet Almond Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Beeswax
  • 10 Drops Myrrh Essential Oil
  • 10 Drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

I’ll tell you what, this stuff sounds great! As we speak, I’m trying to get these ingredients locally & I’ll let you kow how this butter junk works after I try it!!

P.S. Coconut Oil is always little Ms. Faithful when you need a handy dandy moisturizer… Until Tomorrow…

Decorating for the Holidays

Hey guys sorry I missed y’all on Friday! I hope y’all had a great weekend 🙂 Mine flew by ….per usual! I did enjoy sewing my very first project though…

SewingApron

It’s an apron 🙂 I feel like I might be a natural lol. I really enjoyed learning how to sew, and to tell you the truth I have my next 8-15 projects lined out already haha… it might be a bit ambitious but I’m off to an encouraging start!

So… since I missed out on giving y’all a few Holiday decorating tips on Friday I’m going to show you a few links that I thought were pretty great. The first is 26 Party Hacks for the Holidays, some of my favorites are #’s 13, 19, & 24! Who knew you needed to bake the bugs out of pine cones before you decorated them??

This site gives 20 Fall Décor Ideas for the Home using a neutral color palette. I love me some neutrals so I can definitely see myself implementing a few of these ideas… I love the white pumpkins and acorns on the mantel, coffee mugs, fireplaces lit, and lots of warm cozy blankets!! Oh my goodness I wish I had a fireplace to toast my footsies!

Oh and I know I mentioned a smell good on #13 of the Party Hacks, but I found this on Pinterest and I want to try it too!!

Smells like the Holidays

Happy Holidays y’all, don’t forget to come see us at Myra’s this weekend for Small Business Saturday! Until Tomorrow…

Planning for Spring Eating

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I’m soooo hungry 😉 like all the time. I love to eat. I love to cook but I love it even more when good people who love me love to cook good food for me lol. But seriously I have been doing some thinking about my garden at home… and honestly it’s nothing like the veggie garden here at Myra’s. She’s so on top of her game! I want my garden at home to be like that, but I’m hardly ever there…. I really want to learn how to make more time to spend at home!! I’ve been doing that (somewhat) lately… Sometimes it’s nicely refreshing to take a step-back and be a little bit of a home body.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

So I’ve got 2-8’x6′ boxes right outside of my kitchen already. One box is actually quite full of herbies (my herb babies)… Currently not killing Lemon Grass, and several varieties of Rosemary/Oregano/Lavendar! I love herbs and I’m always wanting more :)) but I love veggies too!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

We cooked lunch right out of our garden today! Cut 10-15 leaves of curly leaf mustard greens and sautéed them like spinach with bacon, garlic, onion, and oil. Topped them with balsamic vinegar and lemon, they were delish!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

That’s the kinda thing I want to do on a daily basis… all day every day. Eating what’s in Season, and Knowing what I’m Eating. That’s just another reason why #eatmyyard is such a journey, I’m just learning as I go! Until Tomorrow…
