Myra Visits Colorado

Just to let you guys know.. We had a BLAST in Colorado. It was gorgeously beautiful.. Just like Texas! Well not just like Texas, but the state of CO held a picturesque beauty in it’s own right. We flew into Denver from Houston.. Rented a car from Hertz (btw we got talked into upgraded to an SUV, for more money of coarse, don’t let them fool you.. there were lots of cars on the road.. seemingly apparent that they were not also equipped with four wheel drive.. hmmph). We drove into downtown Denver were we ate at this bangin’ Hot Dog place called Biker Jim’s.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

We each tried a different dog, among a few other things. If you’re ever in Denver be sure to check those bad boys out, they will not disappoint. Great Food. Great Service. Great Atmosphere.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

From Jim’s we headed on to Winter Park, which was about a 2.5 hour drive if I’m not mistaken. It was a lovely simple drive, no hassles at all. When we arrived at Winter Park we drove straight to Beaver’s Sport Shop where we cashed in our Groupon for 50% OFF 2-days of ski rental! We ended up paying a little extra for an upgrade here as well.. but this upgrade was well worth the money.

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

We loaded up our gear and headed to the Zephyr Mountain Lodge, which was totally nice and had very helpful desk service. Our room was cozy and warm, accompanied with a shweet view of the mountain! It had snowed A LOT before we got to CO and it snowed while we were there.. So you can only imagine the white winter wonderland we were living in.

Day 2 & 3 were Full of skiing.. which was amazing as well! (I feel like I have lots of only good things to say about this trip haha). Skiing was an experience in itself. My favorite trails are the slightly downhill bumpy loopy ones that go through the trees 😉 they are totally rockin’and’rollin.. you can ask Duane about the rollin’ hehe.

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

Ok I just realized I have one not so enthusiastic thing to say.. it’s about the Food. I was not impressed with anything at all other than the Rise and Shine CafĂ©.. We ate there for breakfast.. twice 🙂 I consider myself a breakfast guru/connoisseur. So when I say it was good.. it was delish 😉 Well worth it. I got sick from gluten/sugar/dairy overload and did not get to try the Maple Bacon Donut like I had planned for Day 4. If you know me, you know that had Day 4 gone like I thought it would.. I would’ve been basking in the ohhh so goodness of my all-time favorite pairings (well one of them at least): MAPLE & BACON!

Need I say more?

Oh btw don’t fly Spirit. They offer discounts but they stick you with the Cost of Water and the $$Charges$$ for the “No Free Carry-On Bag” Policy.. C’mon??

Ok. Ok. Done with my honest rant. On to the positive vibes. We made it Home to the great State of Texas with wonderfully enjoyable memories of cool mountain air & white powdery wonderlands. Thankful that God gave us the ability to visit another itsy bitsy piece of His creation, and that the memories we have will last for an eternity 😉

Where have you guys been lately? or Plan to Go?

Until Tomorrow…

All Wrapped Up

Last minute gift wrapping/giving/forgot to buy someone a present now you need to regift something from contents only found in or near your home?? We’ve all been there and our guest post has a solution for you!!

Gift wrapping is a big deal in my family. There are competitions.

The finalist are normally my mom and my brother. Yes, my 6’4 Country-Hood brother is a master at wrapping paper and curling ribbons. The present’s wrapping is celebrated as much as the present itself, and with good reason, because they really create beautiful gifts.

I am the hippy child of the family,  and all of the wrapping paper has always bothered me a little bit. Don’t get me wrong… I admire & enjoy it. There is just a nagging thought in the back of my head as we are bundling up all of the leftover paper and filling a trash bag… that it seems so wasteful.  Here is a short, interesting article that talks about the history of wrapping paper,  how much money we spend on it and how much of it enters our landfills every year. (Hint: It’s a lot)

But you can’t give an unwrapped gift. It’s just not right. So you see… I had a problem.

I also had another problem. Being the hippy child that I am I try to take my own bags to the grocery store. If I forget, I ask for paper bags. Well, I forget a lot. I also forget to take my paper bags to the recycling center  (only 5 minutes from my house). This accumulation of brown paper bags drives my husband crazy!

IMG_3516

Two problems & One Solution

As I was organizing my paper bags one day I thought, why not wrap my gifts with this paper! At that moment I decided I would not buy anything for wrapping this year. I would only wrap gifts with what I had in my home. Below is how I did it:

You start by separating the bags at the seamsIMG_3518

You then layout your bag and trim the torn edgesIMG_3521

This leaves you with a nice sheet of ‘wrapping paper’.

IMG_3522Wrap your present…

And decorate! (After I finished this project I looked on Pinterest and there are a lot good ideas on how to decorate a brown paper gifts)

Sometimes we get carried away with our To-Do Lists and getting things done as quick and easy as possible. Let me encourage everyone to try to incorporate mindfulness in every aspect of our lives. If we are mindful of what we say, what we eat, how we spend our time and mindful of our resources… I believe time will slow down and we will be able to feel satisfaction as we complete our tasks.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas! God Bless you, and let’s open our hearts and pour out love this year!

Motivational Monday

How was your weekend? Mine flew by!! I feel like I say that almost every Monday, so I don’t really know why I am ever surprised by this realization… 😉

I did enjoy our Family Ugly Sweater Christmas Party… A few of us actually made our own tacky creations, and some just had some plain ol’ traditionally ugly sweaters lol.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I just love that Ugly Sweaters are becoming a sensation… it’s so much fun to see the different sweaters some people create! And it was actually a lovely weekend to wear a sweater… I was worried we’d literally be Sweating … thank The Lord that we weren’t!

I get a scripture sent to me by text from 89.3 KSBJ every Monday… today’s verse was Psalm 40:8, “God, I surrender my plans & desires to You. I want to obey Your will for my life. Show me the way so I can do Your will.” This verse was extremely motivating for me, because I felt a little worried and anxious about a few things this morning and then… When I read that scripture I was like Thank You for reminding me Lord, I do surrender my plans & desires to you once again today, and I do want to obey Your will for my life.

So instead of worrying, I’m watching and listening for guidance and direction. Thanks for the motivation Lord!

I’m finding some really cool links for planning my Spring Garden… which I hope to start planting in January… I’ll be sharing this info soon!

P.S. Don’t forget about the Candlelight Christmas Eve Service hosted by Myra’s Garden and presented to you by the Vineyard Church this Wednesday December 24th at 6PM!

Christmas Gift Idea: Water Feature

It’s said that the sound of running water can have a serenely calming affect on one’s body. Whether it be a relaxing source of stress relief, a calming sound for the senses, or a picturesque piece of beauty for the eyes. Among many other things, water can run, flow, swirl, shoot, crash, and spray…

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Do you have any water features in or around your home? We’ve carried water features, large and small, here at Myra’s since wayyyy back, before I can even remember! We’ve had circulating basin style ponds, smooth/ribbed sided pottery that the water flows up thru and over, disappearing fountains, multi-tiered fountains, spherical fountains, rock fountains… we’ve dabbled in a little bit of it all.

Heck we even have bird baths! You just have to enlist a few birds in order to get the “water sound” effect. hehe.

But anywho…. what I want to tell you today is above everything we’ve had I think we have one of the coolest water features available right now!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

We’re calling these guys Patio Fountains, but honestly they can go just about anywhere. And that’s because they only require a source of power! Nothing else!! Cool right?? That rings portable to me haha. You simply set this bad boy up in the location of your hearts desire, fill base of fountain with water, hook up the juice (electricity to pump) and voila! You’ve got a nifty little beauty of a fountain!

No digging. No leveling of the base over and over. No cutting and leveling grates. No filling with rock. No running a water source to it…. I could go on and on, but seriously… Need I say more? 🙂

Christmas Cactus

These little beauties are winter flowering house plants that are super duper easy to take care of, they also propagate easily which makes them exceptional candidates for gift giving!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Propagation is actually when a plant can multiply by a process of natural reproduction. Since it’s the Christmas Season and the name of this little guy (Christmas Cactus) just screams “Give me as a Christmas Gift” it’s almost like the perfect gift for a plant lover that has everything/last minute gift/what do I buy my co-worker/white elephant party gift!

It’s one of those gifts that just keeps on giving!!

Not sure if you can grow it?? Christmas Cactus’s are great for many varieties of people with all levels of green thumb abilities. The plants thrive under moderate care & in the conditions of the average home.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Want a house full of Christmas-y blooms? Make sure you expose it to bright light. But Not Too Much! The leaves can burn from Over Exposure to direct sunlight. Water frequently in order to keep the soil slightly moist, or set the pot of the plant in a shallow tray full of pea gravel & water… This will keep the plant moist without having to babysit 😉

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

That is all. Pretty simple huh? Yea I thought so too 🙂 Come pick yours up today! Or stop by for some other pretty darn unique gifting ideas. We’ll hook you up with something cool!!

Blue-Blue Christmas

It’s Christmas time! I love the crisp, cool air and warm sunshine that defines December in Texas.

IMG_3421

homeSWEEThome

This past February my husband Felipe and I bought our first home! This is a really big deal to me because I have moved at least 25 times in the last 11 years. Now, we have a home
where we plan on living for at least three years. While I am not completely okay with the idea of settling down, I am IN LOVE with the idea of decorating my home for the holidays.

Growing up in small town Texas my mom was the Chevy Chase of Christmas. We lived in a large historical home and not an inch was spared of Christmasification. Thousands upon thousands of lights, singing dolls, snowy scenes, Jesus is the Reason signs, placemats, HoHoHo-ing jolly Santas
the joy of Christmas permeated from our home. Here are some old pictures I found of the fun we had:

29856_1427950988597_6020710_n

29856_1427950588587_4776764_n

Due to the need to travel for work, my mom has since downsized; her decorations now include a simple string of lights and a beautiful tiny tree. So, now that I have my own home, it is time that the tradition continues! And my mom came to help!

Since I am a work-at-home wifey, the budget called for the reliable (or not so) Pinterest to be summoned! Below is a few ways I Christmas-fied my homeSWEEThome on the cheap.

The Beach Tree

While dreams of going to the Christmas tree farm and cutting down the perfect tree danced in my head, my body drove on down to Home Depot, told the lady ‘Sure, that one will do’ and was done with it. What can I say? This is real life, y’all!

Shell Ornaments

I had decided I wanted my tree decorations to be a beach theme, mostly because I have a beach cottage style home. However, I did not have the budget to buy ‘themed’ ornaments, nor the time to go hunting for seashells (although that would have been very fun!) My solution: a $12 box of shell potpourri from Hobby Lobby, much like the one pictured below.potpourri

I hot glued ribbons to each and every shell with the help of a friend and my dad (yes, my dad was a master at the glue gun!). This yielded me 50+ beach themed ornaments for about $14 total.

Burlap Flowers

Have you seen this simple Burlap Flower Tutorial trending on Pinterest? It’s so easy and looks great! I bought discounted burlap, and found some pretty fabric I had been saving for the perfect project… and…. wala!

burlap

I also purchased some flowers and garlands for a total of around $10. Here’s my pretty beach tree…

Pinecone Wreath-Thingy

I was inspired by this beautiful Pinterest post pictured below to make a hanging pine cone wreath.

a564eb2cdc6dcd87bf6a99da2512ed03

I was determined to make this with only items I had on hand. I hunted down a few pinecones in the frontyard and even found little mini pinecones.  I had some old wooden pieces I had bought for 5 cents each at a garage sale…

woodsign

And some left over spray paint…

paint

And so, one-two-three…

unnamed (5)

A little extra…

While I was cruising through Hobby Lobby, trying not to buy everything in sight, I stumbled upon the fall items. They were marked down 90%. Yes, 90%!!! Most items were specifically fall – pumpkins,  scarecrows and the like. But one item was only fall colored, and at 50 cents each…

sticks

I painted them…

And then tied them to a burlap covered post…

IMG_3415

I also followed this Doily Tree pin that only required me to purchase a $1 package of doilies from Dollar Tree. Everything else I was able to find around the house. (there will soon be candy where the buttons are!)

IMG_3414

Why decorate?

This past weekend, decorating the house with the people I love the most in the whole-wide-world was one of the best weekends of the year. We had Christmas music, delicious food, and lots of LOVE. I hope that everyone is able to find some time this year to come together and share the joy.

As for my dog Zion, it was just a little too much action for him. He’s all worn out!

It’s beginning to feel A Lot like Christmas!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

I’ve been noticing a lot of folks preparing for the Christmas Holidays now that Thanksgiving has come and gone… #Christmas is now trending people 😉 Lots of beautiful Christmas lights and Festively lit trees are all over Facebook! It definitely gave me the itch to do a little something in my house!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

On my way home from playing some fun board games at my sister’s house last night, I was listening to the great broadcast’s that are always airing on Sunday Evening’s on 96.9 KSBJ… I just love me some Christian Talk Radio. So… they were chatting about Christmas decorations and I though “Oh how apropos! I just put out my dĂ©cor today!!” … they talked about remembering the true reason for the Season (which is the birth of our wonderful Savior Jesus Christ)… I felt kinda bad that I had almost nothing to represent this in my home! #ineedanativity

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Yes I have Angels… and after a few moments of thought… that’s basically it in the dĂ©cor section…

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

I have my Bible and various devotionals set out for my quiet time study… but no nativity… no crosses… no pictures of Jesus… no north star or biblical scriptures to commemorate His life and the reason I have this glorious Holy-day to celebrate.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

What I do have you can see represented in the pictures here. My home was a complete blessing provided only by God. I am thankful for the grace and mercy He shows me everyday, and I feel grateful for the moments in the car last night when He reminded me that my home is one of many places He has given me to exude the light He has placed in me. The light is a place for people to come in and See Him. I pray that I can show people exactly that!

“The Lord our God, the Lord is one.5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” -Deuteronomy 6: 4-9

On the radio last night they were speaking of decorating your home in Christ and using those decorations to remember the true meaning for the season, Jesus… Tell you kids, friends, family, mail-service, strangers, share it with everyone!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

They referenced Ever Thine Home for a set of “Adorenaments”…

“Use your tree to enrich your family spiritually! AdorenamentsÂź is about more than just beautiful ornaments. Every set includes a booklet of mini-devotions to help you connect with your family and teach them the significance of each of the names of Jesus from Scripture.”

I think this is a pretty awesome way to celebrate Christ during Christmas ;)… they have all kinds of stuff for the home on their site! Some of their stuff would fit perfectly in my home 🙂 Especially the “everyday” collection!

What do you guys think? I’m excited to be reminded of the gift of Salvation God provides for us! Have you accepted gift of Jesus Christ?

I have 🙂 and it’s the Best Gift this girl’s ever gotten!

Gearing up for Festive Florals

We’re syked and ready y’all!! Cleaning up & prepping the area for our Festive Florals class being held here at Myra’s Garden tomorrow night at 6PM. This is a new class hosted by Myra’s and led by local Florist Jeanie Fry. We’re so excited to introduce something new and fun to you guys in the local community 🙂

As you should probably know by now… I am a lover of all things Pinterest… I am thrilled that there is now a place to search for and save ideas..projects..inspo..recipes..whatever..you name it it’s probably on Pinterest. As we are prepping for the Festive Florals class and decor-ing our Houses full of Christmas I am feeding my Pinterest addiction like a fat kid feeds on Cake… And believe that I can eat some cake people!!

Hehe… So I am currently desiring these projects in my near future 🙂

inspochristmas

This snowflake looks so Chic with the White on Black theme. My walls are gray so I was thinking of painting my snowflake maroonish-red…What do y’all think??

inspochristmas2

I thought this was such a cute gift accessory idea!! I hate buying those huge packages of bows for my gifting recipients to rip off and throw away… They could throw away this twig instead! Plus… I have some cute little pompoms left over from the Oh So Cute Ugly Sweater I just made last weekend.

inspochristmas1

Lastly on my Inspo List today are these cute little HANDMADE Christmas trees!! I love these things so much 🙂 and I love them in all sizes! Coney Christmas trees have been my desire for years… but they can be so Darn Expensive to buy premade from the store. This looks like a doable solution to my “lack of” a NON-budget-pocket-book-problem. Basically I’m saying this girl has the Champagne taste Beer pocket book Problem! hehe…

Until Tomorrow… Let’s Get Crafty!

DIY: Repurposing old Mismatched Christmas Decor

So today Me and Myra pulled out all the old faithful Christmas decorations! …even the ones way wayy wayyyy back in the dusty cobweb filled corners of the attic 😉 Some were still in great shape, some were worn, and some were mismatched from everywhere there and back. We spent a little while sifting through the boxes and I realized we actually had a lot of great stuff to work with!

There are lots of cute Christmas trees ranging from small to large, round to traditional. Ornaments, garland and lights… So we decided to choose a color theme… and we went with silver to start 🙂 Silver pairs well with just about anything and it makes for a good backdrop for other colors…or glitter…or more Silver!

Here are a few things I played around with today… Oh my goodness y’all I can’t wait to get home and make room for my Christmas Tree and all the decorations I have inspiration for!!

And here’s how they turned out after applying a little TLC in the form of spray paint! WooHoo!!

DIY: Do Something

Hey guys! So today I’m sharing “Thanks” since it’s apropos for this week’s Holiday (THANKSgiving)…  I’m so thankful to be here today and to be given the opportunity to share this experience with y’all 🙂 The DIY I’m posting today is more of a commentary than a list of steps for you to “Do Yourself”… I’m more interested in promoting you to just “Do Something” in general.

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

Normally I would say… Do something for yourself or someone else… but today I’m thinking we should lean more towards the someone else. Projects are always nice things to share with people. I love working on projects with friends, coworkers, and family members! Working on a project alongside someone can be a great way of getting to know someone better, showing love & support to the people we already know really well, or just inserting a little fun into the “seriousness” of our daily lives.

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

This little DIY: Apron you’re seeing is a project I wanted to do in order to learn how to sew. I figured an apron would be simple enough to learn on and useful enough to use in my kitchen and garden. My wonderfully talented stepmom Cheryl was kind enough to lend her skills for guidance and assistance throughout this project… I would’ve been lost without her! I’m so thankful that we got to spend time together… visiting, cutting fabric, sewing, trimming, fixing mishaps, and sewing some more! It was superb quality-time that I will forever cherish 🙂

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

My Dad also lent a hand supervising our work 😉 He is actually a wonderfully talented seamster himself! He gave me pointers and hovered conveniently (just in case I needed him lol). I love that he knows so much about so many things… and he always knows how to go one step further to do the job that much better! I think of him and his work ethic often 🙂 He makes me strive to be a more better faster stronger harder efficiently smarter worker.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

In total I probably only worked on this project for about 8 hours… but the quality of the time spent with my dear family is infinite. Thank you Lord for my wonderful family… and for them living across the street so that I have ample opportunity to make glorious memories with them!

Until Tomorrow Lovelies…

-XOXO,

Myra’s
